Lewes 5s: First Season, Forever Legends
On a blazing hot Saturday afternoon, the Lewes Women’s 5s made the long journey to Littlehampton for their final match of the season against Phoenix 1. With the Easter holidays affecting availability, the team was running a little light on numbers—but spirits were lifted thanks to some heroic support from the Lewes Legends. A huge thank you (in no particular order) to Alison, Sophie, Rebecca, and Kim—mythical both in name and nature!
The match kicked off with real intent. Coco opened the scoring with a fantastic solo run into the D, calmly slotting the ball past the keeper. The momentum continued with Kim finishing off a well-worked move, assisted by the ever-lovely Bea. Kim was unlucky not to double her tally moments later, as the ball trickled agonisingly along the goal line but somehow evaded a finishing touch.
Beatrice was a constant threat, making another excellent solo run and providing a dangerous cross to Kim, who was only denied by a superb save from the Phoenix goalkeeper. Not to be outdone, Sophie then lit up the right wing with a storming solo run, cutting inside the D and unleashing a powerful diagonal strike into the far corner—unstoppable and undeniably spectacular. By halftime, Lewes were comfortably 4–0 up and seeking shade from the scorching sun.
Second Half
The second half continued in much the same fashion, with Phoenix defending deep and the Lewes midfield pushing forward at every opportunity. Beatrice, Coco, and Esme dominated the centre of the pitch, dictating the tempo and launching wave after wave of attack. Zara, Orla, Phoebe, Rebecca, and Fiona worked tirelessly in defence and transition, keeping the pressure high and the tempo relentless. With no keeper in goal, Alison stood strong at the back, calmly marshalling the defensive line.
Coco netted her second of the match with another fine finish, pushing the score to 5–0. The final goal of the game came from Julia, capping off a commanding performance and securing a well-deserved 6–0 victory.
But this win was more than just points on the board; it marked the end of an unbeaten season for the Women’s 5s in their very first year of adult hockey. Even more impressively, it sealed the league title. A phenomenal achievement and a testament to the hard work, spirit, and talent of every player who has pulled on the 5s shirt this season.
Special mention must go to Ruby and Pip, who started the season as core members of the 5s and quickly impressed with their skill, composure, and determination on the pitch. Their development has been phenomenal, and it’s no surprise they were called up to the 3s during the season. Both players have risen to the challenge of faster-paced, more competitive hockey, showing maturity beyond their years and continuing to shine in higher divisions while still scoring great goals.
Heidi has also stepped up, now regularly playing for the 4s. A dynamic and dependable player, she brought energy and grit to every game she played for the 5s, and her transition into the 4s is a true reflection of her progress and potential. Her presence on the pitch, in defence, was always felt and appreciated.
Brooke has been one of the true stalwarts of the 5s, turning up week after week and giving her all, no matter the conditions or the opposition. Consistent, reliable, and endlessly hard-working, Brook has also stepped up to the 4s when needed, seamlessly fitting in and showing just how far she’s come. Always ready to listen, learn, and give 100%, her versatility and quiet determination have been an asset to every team she’s played in.
Ela deserves huge praise as well, having played almost every game this season and doing so with great heart and commitment. Ela has also contributed to the 4S when called upon and never looked out of place. She’s grown in confidence over the season and become a key part of the team’s success.
And finally, a warm thank you to Bella and Sophie S, who joined the team whenever school fixtures allowed. They always slotted into the squad seamlessly, bringing flair, tenacity, and wonderful team spirit with them. Their talent is obvious, but it’s their positive attitudes, big smiles, and graceful play under pressure that really stood out. They were a joy to have in the side whenever they were available.
These players represent the bright future of Lewes Hockey Club, and their journeys this season, whether staying with the 5s or progressing up the ranks, are a testament to the strength of the club’s development and the dedication of every individual.
Julia took on the huge task of both managing and playing, supported by the ever-organised and cheerful Sasha. Their efforts were vital in keeping this team together and thriving.
We also must mention the very lovely and Helpful Media coordinator, Donna, who week in, week out comliped our match reports!
It’s been an unforgettable season for an unforgettable team.
Thank you to everyone who competed for us throughout the season. Without you, nothing is possible, but with you, everything is.
Go Lewes!
