Lewes Mens 5s 2-2 Brighton & Hove 7s

Last season Falmer was a happy hunting ground for the Mens 5s with 2 wins from 2 games. But there record against Brighton and Hove teams in recent seasons hasn't been great.

Early signs were good for Brighton with a dominant start but the Lewes defence held firm against the early onslaught. With the 5s first meaningful attack Sandy threw an aerial down the right channel which Mark gambled the defender wouldn't be able to intercept and when he couldn't Mark had a one on one with the keeper which he won with a accurate hard shot into the goal. Lewes then had their strongest period of the game and were able to push Brighton back and put sustained pressure on their defence. Rupert added a second when he swept home Sandy's ball into the D. The 5s defence of James H, Peter, Simon and Felix with Paul in goal were solid throughout and held the visitors at bay to maintain the lead until half time.

The 5s knew they had to keep the work rate going as Brighton would throw everything at them in the second half and although the visitors were able to control possession Lewes were denying any clear chances, the midfield of Tom and Sandy in the centre with JC, James T down the left and Alex down the right were keeping up the work rate as well as creating opportunities on the counter.
Brighton were able to pull one back with a well worked goal from a free hit and an equaliser from a solid hit. Both teams had chances to win it the closest either team got to a 3rd goal was when James T's shot looked like it was heading to the bottom corner only for Brighton's keeper to make a fantastic diving stick save to deflect it round the post. Noah and Alex also came close for the hosts but a draw was probably a fair result.
With a deep squad of 15 this week the forwards were split into 2 partnerships, Mark and Ashley started with Rupert and Noah rotating in, both pairs did a great job of defending from the front pressing the opponents as well as providing options on the attack.

Also for the first time this season the 5s also avoided getting any cards, hockey is so much easier with 11 on the pitch. The game was generally played in a positive atmosphere which always makes for a more enjoyable experience.

Next week the 5s head to the Triangle to take on Mid-Sussex 3s who are currently undefeated.
