The Mens 5s finished the first half of the season with a late start at Falmer v Crowborough 2s, Falmer has been a lucky ground for the 5s in recent seasons and they were hoping to build on a strong performance in their previous game against league leaders Horsham.
With the wind howling across Falmer thanks to Storm Darragh the conditions were tricky for players, umpires and the few brave souls on the sidelines.
The 5s had the wind at their backs for the first half but it was Crowborough who settled early as Lewes struggled to maintain possesion, the visitors first PC was well worked and caught the 5s napping. The home team responded well just as they had v Horsham and had a string of PCs, although the first handful led to nothing David was getting his eye in and dispatched an equaliser with a hard hit. Crowborough were soon back ahead when on a counter the shot deflected high and looped into the goal or did it? Goal was given either way. 5s were straight back on the attack and a well worked goal found David in the D and after beating the defender scooped the ball in 2-2. Was still time for David to complete his first half hat trick when Tom Evans found him all alone in the D and David calmly lifted the ball over the keeper.
The 5s half time chat was about maintaining the high energy pressing from the front that has been the basis for the recent strong performances. They performed the plan brilliantly with the forwards of Mark and Curtis not giving the defenders any rest and the midfield behind of Tom E, David C, James W, JC, Tom C and Sandy denying space. Lewes were a constant threat and David added another again from a PC, Mark made it 5 with a deft touch in front of the keeper from Pete's pass. Tom E made it 6 from another PC when David's initial shot hit a foot on the line but good umpiring allowed the advantage so Tom could sweep in.
The defence of Peter, Simon, James H, Julien, Steve and Paul (in goal) excelled in the second half making numerous interceptions and tackles and denying Crowborough any clear shooting chances.
The game got a little feisty in the closing stages and was more than a few lazy stick fouls by both teams but the 5s kept their heads to keep 11 on the pitch and earn a much needed and well deserved 3pts.
Curtis is now off to Scotland after a brief two game cameo, was good to have him back, safe travels!
The 5s now have a month off as the league enters the Xmas break having moved themselves off the bottom of the table. They will be looking to repeat recent performances when the league restarts on January 11th.
