The 3 pm match between Crowborough and Lewes was a tense contest, with rain enthusiastically pouring down from the off and the wind picking up later.
Q1: The game started with a flurry of activity, with Lewes earning a short corner early on, but the rebound went wide. Lots of pressure in the Lewes D with some tight marking and passing from Crowborough, Goalkeeper Mia making a crucial kick clearance to relieve pressure. Despite both teams having chances, the first quarter ended goalless, 0-0.
Q2: Lewes took more control back in the second quarter, some great runs from Brooke and others from Coco connecting on the edge of the D. Crowborough goal from a break. Lewes fought back, super pass from Jasmine into the D- deflected, a nice break from Brooke to Eleanor was unable to find the back of the net. Successful tackles by Merle, and pressure from Erin Millie and Mabel. The score at halftime was 0-1.
Inspiring upbeat team talk at half time by Gemma, great energy and the quickest “get water and get together” the parents have ever seen. Impressive.
Q3: The rain subsided, replaced by wind and a quick 2nd goal from Crowborough. Lovely pressure and perseverance from Coco pulled one goal back for Lewes, making it 1-2. Crowborough had a short corner attempt, but it went wide. Some nice long passes, Hannah to Heidi to Ela. More kicks from Mia in the Goal. Pressure in waves from both sides. A late short corner that Lewes couldn't equalise, left the score 1-2.
Q4: Lewes continued to push, and after a series of strong defensive blocks, Eleanor scored a well-timed goal to level the match at 2-2.
Overall both teams had opportunities, a hard-fought game ended in a fair draw, with both teams showing resilience and determination in testing conditions. Great hockey.
