Lionesses (U16 Girls) 1 1 Brighton U16 SDL England Hockey League

Julia Blake-Madigan4 Mar - 11:41

Though the result was a draw, the celebration was as lively as if they had won.

First Half: A Promising Start

The match kicked off with an energetic display of swift, creative passing from both sides. The Lionesses, a vibrant mix of one under-16, one 15-year-old, two 14-year-olds, and several promising 13- and 12-year-olds (reminiscent of a younger Nalas team), showcased their technical skills and ambition from the outset.
Brighton, enjoying greater possession, gradually began to carve out opportunities. Their persistence paid off in the 14th minute when they managed to open the scoring, setting the tone for a closely contested first half. Despite the setback, Lewes maintained a positive outlook, continuously creating chances to level the score.

Second Half: Resilience and a Moment of Brilliance
As the second half unfolded, the Lionesses faced intermittent pressure from a well-organised Brighton side. The standout moment came from the ever-reliable Isobel in goal, whose fine saves kept Brighton confined to their slender advantage. Even as the opposition pressed on, the Lionesses fought back, driven by a determination that belied their young age.
The breakthrough arrived with just 10 minutes remaining. After sustained pressure and numerous close calls, Ruby emerged as the match-leveller. In a display of remarkable skill and composure, she deftly manoeuvred past three Brighton players. With a perfectly executed reverse flick, she sent the ball high and beyond the grasp of the keeper, levelling the match and igniting a surge of belief in her teammates.
Following Ruby’s stunning equaliser, the Lionesses enjoyed further opportunities to claim victory. Though they came agonisingly close on two additional occasions, good defending and a sprinkle of bad luck meant that the scoreline remained 1-1.

A Celebration of Team Spirit
The final whistle brought more than just the sound of a draw—it was a moment of collective pride. Every parent, coach, and spectators were deeply impressed by the energy, courage, and teamwork displayed by the young players. Their never-say-die attitude and commitment to playing as one cohesive unit were evident throughout the match.
A special congratulatory shout-out goes to the players in order of age (more or less): Ruby, Ella, Brooke, Isobel, Bella, Sophie, Eleanor, Bea, Heidi, Alicia, Erin, Hannah, Minnie, and Esme.

Though the result was a draw, the celebration was as lively as if they had won. This match will surely be remembered as a testament to what can be achieved with heart and perseverance on the pitch.
