In a thrilling encounter that kept spectators on the edge of their seats, the Lewes Lionesses put in a fantastic team performance to secure a well-earned 1-1 draw against East Grinstead in their latest England Hockey U16 league match.
From the first whistle, the game was packed with energy, skill, and determination. Lewes started strongly, with Ruby, Sophie, Bella, and Bea linking up well to drive forward, while Minnie put in a tireless shift in midfield. Despite their dominance, it was East Grinstead who struck first, scoring against the run of play.
Undeterred, the Lionesses responded brilliantly. A flowing team move saw the ball worked to Ruby, who showed exceptional dribbling skills, weaving past defenders before rounding the keeper and calmly flicking the ball into the net to bring the game level.
The match continued to seesaw, with both sides pushing forward. The East Grinstead keeper was called into action multiple times and produced a string of outstanding saves to keep Lewes at bay. By halftime, despite the Lionesses' attacking efforts, the score remained 1-1.
The second half mirrored the first, with Lewes dominating possession and creating numerous chances. Ruby and Sophie came agonizingly close to scoring again, well supported by Bea, Bella, and Minnie, but the East Grinstead shot-stopper continued her heroic display. At the other end, Hannah was everywhere in defence, making crucial tackles and interceptions and keeping the opposition at bay with a commanding performance. She was well supported by Elena and Freddie, who also put in strong defensive shifts to ensure East Grinstead had very few chances.
Despite their best efforts, the Lionesses couldn’t find the winning goal, but their performance was nothing short of outstanding. With an average team age of just 14.08 years, their energy, resilience, and teamwork were remarkable against tough opposition.
The match was a brilliant showcase of youth hockey, and the determination, skill, and spirit displayed by the Lewes girls left coaches, parents, and spectators full of admiration.
